The story of Arkansas State University began in 1909 as an agricultural school focused on agriculture, horticulture and textile manufacturing. As the needs of its students and communities evolved, so did the university. By the 1920s, A-State had become a junior college, and in 1925 it officially became the First District Agricultural and Mechanical College. Just a few years later, in 1932, the institution awarded its first four-year degrees.
Over the decades, Arkansas State continued expanding its academic offerings, research capabilities and graduate programs, eventually becoming a comprehensive university offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
