Starting College: Navigating the Emotional Transition

Emotional

Learn how to recognize and manage the emotional challenges that come with starting your university journey.

What happens when we start college, and which is the biggest challenge?

When we arrive in a new city or a new house, we are exposed to new environments, academic levels, and people. We may feel so overwhelmed that we forget to monitor our emotional well-being. The semester starts, and it is a whirlwind of activities. Then, suddenly, we have finished the university!

Sometimes we think that everything “is fine” just because other people don’t show or share their emotions, so do not pressure yourself to go at the pace of anybody else or believe that everything must be perfect. Be patient with yourself and acknowledge your feelings; pay attention to your mood swings and thoughts.

Starting the university can be a wonderful and exciting experience, but it can also bring its own unique challenges. It’s natural to feel nervous, emotionally overwhelmed, or uncertain during the first few weeks, and it can take time before you feel like you’ve found your feet. Remember that everyone processes things—both academic and emotional—at a different pace.

Make the best of this chapter in your life by remembering to focus only on the present, do not dwell on the past.
